2 Big CO Mulies Hit the Dirt "Driven Style"

Hey all of you BIG BUCK FANATICS,

Well...where do I even start?! Pat and I just got back from the most awesome mule deer hunt we've ever been or probably ever watched on tv.  I can't wait for ya'll to see the footage, you will totally flip out!  We packed our bags in the Driven Chevy and headed on our 16 hour drive to Eastern Colorado.  We left our sunny state of Minnesota only to find out we would be driving through a huge snow storm/blizzard, thank god for the 4 wheel drive and the Good year tires from Bauer Built!  Those of you that know Patrick also know that we do NOT drive by a Cracker Barrel, god forbid the whole truck shakes if we go by one and we don't stop, so the first stop of the trip...You got it!  But I will have to tell you, it was really yummy!

We arrived in Limon, CO safe and sound around midnight.  Wow, what a trip but we couldn't wait to get up in the morning to meet our guide from Outdoor Expeditions Jerome Vinet and start our hunt!  The first day we hunted the high was only 16 degrees, brrrr.  We saw alot of deer movement but just couldn't get close enough.  Day 2 it warmed up a little but it was still 26 degrees.  Day 3 things finally came together for me! It was the weirdest weather we have ever seen, 33 degrees and misty/drizzling rain.  That was only until we spotted a big mulie that we wanted to go after and then it started pouring, here comes the FUN!  After 250 yard belly crawl in the pouring rain through a sandy creek bottom we got 15 yards from him!  As we all peeked up to get a closer look at him, he stood up.  Pat had the camera ready and rolling and was telling me to "shoot"! After trying 2 different times to shoot with the big buck standing at 25 yards now I kept saying, "I can't, it won't go off!" Everyone starting to panick, I pulled the trigger a 3rd time and boom, the gun went off and I had hit him perfect! These suckers are tough animals though he took the shot and kept walking slowly away thats when Jerome and I reloaded and took the final shot that dropped him in his tracks! My first mulie was now on the ground!  FYI Make sure you keep the sand out of your gun when your crawling, I almost learned this lesson the hard way, the sand had gotten stuck in the trigger mechanism! Ahhh...

                          Glassing for Mulies!
Valley and Creek bed where we stalked up on my big buck!

Now that we had one mule deer riding home in the Chevy it was now Pat's turn to see if he could outdo his Mulie from last year in Alberta. The next day we went to another piece of property and drove around glassing all day.  Right at last light, we stopped the truck and Jerome got on top to get a higher vantage point to glass over the bottom.  As he was looking way out on the bottom, the sun hit something that shined, holy cow there he was the monster muley at 60 yards laying down in tall thick weeds.  Pat got his shooting sticks up and his gun ready I was on him with the camera now it was just a waiting game.  He was starring right at us the entire time but I guess as big bucks do, sometimes they think they are invisible.  After a 5 minute stare-down the mulie jumps up and turns all in one motion and Pat passes on taking a risky shot.  A big buck just slipped right through our fingers, let me tell you the boys spirits were at a low now!  The next day we spent all day long glassing for that buck and never did spot him! Pat passed on alot of other nice bucks but he had his sights on Mr. Invisible!  The next morning we went extra early to get in there and spot at first light.  Pat had the Nikon EDG spotting scope out and as the sun came up he was glassing a bunch of different deer down in the bottom but where was HE?!  At 9:30 a.m. Pat still glassing he spotted something shining in the tall weeds, Holy Cow it was him! All you could see was about 4 inches of his right side sticking up through the tall weeds he was bedded in but we knew this was our chance!  Crawling on our hands and knees Pat and Jerome got me set up with the camera about 250 yards away from this big boy up on a hill for a vantage point.  That's when the fun really began for the boys.  They managed to belly crawl to 100 yards from the buck and got set up.  Another waiting game for the Driven Crew.  After waiting what seemed like eternity, the sun had started to move and now he wasn't in a shaded area anymore.  So the game was on! He stood up and from where the boys were set up they coudln't see him and here I was making hand movements trying to tell them that he was up and trying not to let the buck see me! Finally Pat pulls up his binoculars at me to realize that the deer was up so he quick turns around and gets set up on the shooting sticks.  The buck starts coming through the tall weeds at 100 yards right at them and stops.  Oh no another stare down! For the next 2 minutes nobody could move, he was looking right in our direction! Then, he made the move that changed everything, he came out of the tall weeds and turned broadside and started pawing at his other bed he was moving too and BOOM Pat made a perfect 95 yard shot and dropped him! I've never seen so much excitement come from two grown men in my life! WOW I couldn't believe it, here I was up on the hill and filmed the entire thing! I was in amazement, none of us could believe what just happened but we did know that Pat potentially had his second 200" deer on the ground!

Come to find out when we got to the deer, there were a few beds down there and a prominent trail where this deer had been doing this every day! The weeds were just so tall that he was well hidden in them!  Without our EDG spotting scope, we would have never spotted this big boy!  Congrats to Patrick on a deer of a lifetime!

We headed to Kansas after our CO hunt with Wes and Mary Beth Trawel at Kansas Unlimited.  We had a great time and saw a nice shooter the first morning but the weather just wasn't cooperating with us! We are now at home and are going to be hunting Minnesota and Wisconsin this next week! Wish us luck!

We hope everyone is having a great fall hunting season!

Big Buck Driven and Happy Hunting,

Pat & Nicole

I enjoy following you two on Facebook and thought I better check out Driven TV for the rest of the story. Looking forward to your next DVD.
